Whales became popular weathervane themes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the whaling industry brought great wealth to America's northeast coast. With New England considered the epicentre of weathervane production, the whale became both a traditional & classic colonial theme. The sperm whale weathervane is still a common fixture in the skyline of Cape Cod, and some stunning antique wooden examples are held in notable American folk art collections.

The humpback whale weathervane displayed in The Gallery is signed, dated and number (#6).
It was inspired by the children's book Whale is Stuck, illustrated by Charles Fuge, and was included as part of Greens' original (8) numbered series.
